There is nothing ordinary about this drumming workshop. An infectious energy has taken over. A buzzing, beating, breathless energy. However, behind the beat of drums lies a serious agenda. Creative Routes, an arts organisation for survivors of mental distress, provides a creative outlet for people with mental health issues. It provides support, friendship and advice.

Judging from these drummer's passion and enthusiasm, it would be hard to guess that drumming is a recent addition to the charity's activity list. Creative Routes also provides creative writing, Soundsculpture, dance and drama workshops. "Our vision at Creative Routes is to offer something that doesn’t patronise, that doesn’t take away their control." Explains Sarah Tonin, the organisation's founder. "Our role is to empower and help people move away from dependency and self pity."

This is not occupational therapy, these people are not passive recipients of a 'treatment'. It is a pioneering user-led enterprise which helps people who have experienced chronic mental difficulties take control of their well being. "Creative Routes is successful because it is 'mad led'" says Tonin, "It's not run by normal people. We use high quality artists, not therapists. But we've been there, we know what people need."

True to its goal, the group's drumming workshop has found a new enthusiast. "I forgot myself," explains one new recruit.

O'Matsu, who has been there since the beginning, excitedly recounts their drumming performance with Evelyn Glennie at the Royal Festival Hall. "It has helped me find a direction and has opened doors. I feel like everyone is equal at Creative Routes. It's very much a secure group and a great confidence builder."

"I love seeing people blossom through our workshops," says Tonin. "Seeing them wake up, is wonderful. Suddenly, they see what they are capable of."
